Moving into procurement in 2006 as Head of UK Equipment Procurement for all spacecraft built in Portsmouth and Stevenage the company was now called Astrium and 100% owned by Airbus. Again Roy concentrated on developing Lean methodologies with the supply chain to cut lead times and drive efficiency through a bespoke manufacturing capability.
Moving into the Astrium Products team Roy deployed a Customer Feedback system across 11 sites in Europe to gather the Voice of the Customer to drive improvement activities.
In 2014 with the set up of Airbus Defence and Space Roy moved to Quality where he led the UK Quality team on all satellite programmes and helped introduce techniques from the car industry into building satellites.
Since July 2017 Roy moved to Engineering where he, alongside a small team, have embarked on a task to integrate 7,000+ engineers across Europe with products as diverse as the A400M Atlas military tactical transport aircraft to Rosalind Franklin, our Mars Rover.
Roy has been involved in the last 10 years as a STEM ambassador and is determined to develop the fascination of engineering within all levels of education, he is an Enterprise Advisor to Gosport & Fareham Multi Academy Trust and the focal point for Airbus at UTC Portsmouth. In the last few years Roy has become more involved in apprenticeships as the Chairman of the “Space Group” developing level 4 and 6 standards specifically for the Space Industry.
He is married with two daughters and any spare time available is spent running a horse and rider taxi service or at least that is what his daughters’ think!
